Where are you on the handstand?

The handstand is twelve steps, from a wall plank to a 360° pirouette. Answer honestly, one step at a time. The first "not yet" is the step to train, and you get its drills.

Your next step shows up here. Each "yes" moves you one step along the tree. Can't tell whether you'd pass? Test it today and come back.

The twelve steps

This is the handstand tree from the Kufu app. Each step has one challenge, and you move on only when you pass it. That stops the most common handstand mistake: skipping the wall work, then spending months kicking up into a bent, banana-shaped line.

#StepChallenge to pass
1Wall plank holds60 sec, nose to wall
2Chest-to-wall handstand60 sec, hands one fist from the wall
3Heel pulls10 controlled reps each leg
4Toe pulls10 controlled reps each leg
5Kick-up to wall8 of 10 consistent entries
6Freestanding 10 secConsistent 10 sec holds
7Freestanding 30 secConsistent 30 sec holds
8Freestanding 60 secSolid foundation, clean line
9Handstand walking10+ controlled steps
10Shape changesStraddle, tuck and pike in the handstand
11Pirouette (180°)Half turn, controlled
12Pirouette (360°)Full turn, clean exit

After step 8 the tree branches: walking, shape changes and the half pirouette all open from a solid 60-second hold, and the full pirouette needs the half.

How often to practise

Little and often beats long sessions. Ten to fifteen minutes at the start of a workout, three to five days a week, while you're fresh. That's why Kufu puts skill blocks at the top of a session, before the heavy lifting.

Look after your wrists. Warm them up before every session (circles, then palm and finger stretches), and back off if they ache the next day.

FAQ

Chest to the wall or back to the wall?

Chest to the wall. It teaches the straight, stacked line you need freestanding. Back-to-wall holds let you arch, and the arch follows you off the wall.

How long does a freestanding handstand take?

It varies a lot. Most adults who practise several times a week reach consistent 10-second holds in a few months. Steady practice matters more than anything else.

Can I train handstands alongside lifting?

Yes, and they fit well. Skill work goes first while you're fresh, and the shoulder strength from pressing helps the hold. That combination is what Kufu is built around.
